The VAULT Collection

The VAULT Costume Collection

“Back when the show first aired I always thought how amazing it would be to own one of the seaQuest uniforms.  Years later my visit to John Kachmar’s Costume Museum was a revelation – never did I think I’d get to see such a vast collection of original wardrobe up close.

I discovered my first pieces in a Sci-Fi shop in Orlando – there was something so decadent about finding screenused items on the rack.  Since then the joy of the hunt has never waned, and thanks to the generosity of some fellow ‘Questies I’ve built up a collection the likes of which I’d never dared dream.

I’m honoured to be able to preserve part of the legacy of seaQuest and proud to showcase it here on my site for everyone to enjoy…”

Captain’s Duty Uniform

Season: 1

Character: Nathan Bridger

Signature costume for the show worn by Roy Scheider as Captain Nathan Bridger.  Complete outfit consists of black flightsuit (no size marked) with double-pull central zipper, velcro side adjusters, velcro sleeve adjusters, zippered pockets, mandarin collar with gold embroidered Captain’s trident motifs, blue Captain’s shoulder rank patch, UEO shoulder patch and seaQuest 4600 chest patch.  Interior bias label in white silk with ‘Roy’ handwritten in black ink.  Ivory cotton undershirt features ribbed turtleneck and cuffs with ‘SR’ stamped in black inside collar.

The command uniforms for the first season bridge crew were off-the-rack airforce flightsuits with added patches and modified collars.  The pattern was copied to produce a number of bespoke jumpsuits exclusively for the Captain tailored in softer cotton duck.

This costume features towards the end of the episode where Bridger orders Chief Crocker to get him some ‘climbing gear’ so he can perform a daring rescue of world leaders who are being held against their will during an attempted coup by the UEO secretary.

Captain’s Scuba Wetsuit

Season: 2/3

Character: Nathan Bridger

Episode: N/A

Wetsuit made for Roy Scheider as Nathan Bridger.  Two-piece outfit consists of an off-the-rack O’Neill ‘Farmer John’ sleeveless neoprene wetsuit (size medium) with blue trim, rubber knee pads, screen-printed detailing and seaQuest 4600 patch on centre chest.  Long sleeved oversuit features blue trim, central zipper with long embroidered pull and large seaQuest 4600 patch on right breast.  Internal bias label inscribed ‘Bridger’ handwritten in black ink.

The branded wetsuits were supplied as part of an endorsement deal with the production to feature throughout the second season.  This wetsuit first appeared in promo shots worn by Scheider with a standard-size seaQuest patch applied to the left side.  This was subsequently replaced with a larger one attached on the right for use in the show – although Bridger would not appear in a wetsuit again for the remainder of the series.

Captain’s Camo BDU (Battle Dress Uniform)

Episode: ‘Good Soldiers’

Two-piece ‘sky-blue’ Tactical camouflage uniform made by Rothco (size Medium) consisting of button-front jacket with production-added elastic dance-strap and press studs, patch pockets and mandarin collar.   Pants with button fly, cargo pockets and added elastic belt loops and stirrups.  T-shirt in grey-blue with patch pocket, velcro fastening in collar and ‘UEO Security’ screenprinted on right sleeve.  All individually marked ‘Bridger’ handwritten in black ink on interior.

Worn by Roy Scheider in his final appearance in the series, this style of BDU was also used by Commander Ford, Lucas Wolenczak and Dagwood on their mission in seaQuest 2032.

Captain’s Casuals

Season: All

Character: Nathan Bridger

Episode: ‘To Be Or Not To Be’

Miscellaneous wardrobe items acquired for Roy Scheider comprising of plain short-sleeved light grey heather t-shirt (no sizes marked) with production-altered velcro collar and a pair of tan cargo-style shorts by Generra (size 33).

Nathan Bridger wore similar items to this throughout the series, starting from his introduction in the pilot and later in scenes where the Captain was off-duty.  The T-shirt & shorts combination was somewhat autobiographical of Scheider who had appeared onscreen in similar attire since ‘Jaws’ in 1975.

Commander’s Duty Uniform ‘Seasuit’

Season 2/3

Character: Commander Scott Keller (NASA)

Episode: ‘Dream Weaver’

Jumpsuit in heavy blue cotton worn by Kent McCord as NASA Commander Scott Keller (no sizes marked).  Complete outfit of zip-front one-piece with mandarin collar, quilted shoulders and patch pockets on chest, thighs and rear.  Accessories include ‘Alice’ style military webbing belt, black webbing straps with male plastic connectors on shoulders and sleeves.  Exhibits seaQuest, UEO and rank patches and Walt Disney World embroidered internal bias label with ‘Keller’ handwritten in black ink.  Screenprinted ‘Property Of’ undershirt by Hanes (size small) in grey fleck with triangular Hammerhead logo on front and large print on rear.

The ‘Seasuits’ were designed by Ingrid Price and custom-made at Disney Studios due to it being the only facility able to of deliver a bulk order.  The nylon buckles were supplied by Fastex (Model QR-1) and were designed to marry up with corresponding safety (orange) or utility (black) vests which McCord also wears throughout the episode. This uniform may have been re-used in subsequent episodes and later had its patches upgraded to the rank of Captain.

Crew Scuba Wetsuit

Season 2/3

Character: Miguel Ortiz

Episode: N/A

One-piece neoprene ‘Farmer John’ style wetsuit by O’Neill (size XL) made for Marco Sanchez as Sensor Chief Ortiz.  Black sleeveless bodysuit with blue trim, rubber kneepads, screenprinted branding and  large velcro fastening on left shoulder.  SeaQuest 4600 patch added to chest.

This was one of many products donated by the brand to both cast and crew alike for filming the second season onwards.  This particular outfit was worn by Sanchez in the publicity shoot to introduce the new crew. The seaQuest patches on the suits were later upgraded to larger ones for subsequent episodes.

Duty Uniform ‘Shortie’ Seasuit

Season: 2/3

Character: Lonnie Henderson/Heiko Kimura

Episode: Various

Complete 3-piece female Duty Uniform comprising of grey-fleck cotton bodysuit (no size marked) and heavy cotton Indigo blue zip-front sleeveless jumpsuit with patch pockets on chest, vent pockets in sides and flapped pockets on rear.  Mandarin collar carries internal bias label embroidered ‘Mary Young Gordon’ and ‘Henderson’ inscribed in black ink.  Accessories include adjustable black pistol belt, seaQuest 4600 chest patch, Lt. Commander triangular collar patches and removable velcro name patch designating ‘Lt. Commander H. Kimura’.

The ‘Shortie’ seasuits were so named for their daring cut & length.  As the mandate for season 2 was to present a ‘younger, sexier’ crew the designers introduced more revealing uniforms.  The trouser version of these suits became standard after Roy Scheider objections to the shorts looking less professional.  Although apparently allocated to Kathy Evison, this particular uniform may well have been the last ever made for the show as it was adjusted for Julia Nickson, whose character was to become a regular on the show just before cancellation.

Duty Uniform ‘Seasuit’

Season: 2/3

Character: Various

Episode: All

Custom made heavy cotton zip-front jumpsuit (size 38) with quilted shoulders, patch pockets on front and rear and mandarin collar.  Collar with Internal bias tag ‘Mary Young Gordon’ and logo embroidered with printed care instructions.  Uniform features seaQuest 4600 chest patch, velcro fastening for frontal name tag, UEO shoulder patch and red triangle patch denoting rank of Petty Officer.

Apparently only 50 Seasuits were ever produced and were frequently reused by both cast and background artistes by switching out rank patches etc. The denim used was prone to fading and purposefully became lighter with every wash to achieve the worn-in look.

Seaman 1st Class Crew Shirt

Season: 2/3

Character: ‘T. Rothman’

Episode: All

Chambray polycotton blend short-sleeved shirt (size Large) made by Seafarer with mandarin collar, button front, buttoned pockets, seaQuest 4600 chest patch, DSV 4600 embroidered removable black velcro name tag, UEO shoulder patch and blue triangle shoulder patch designating the rank of Seaman 1st Class.  Internal bias label reads ‘Mikah’ handwritten in black ink.

These utility shirts (mostly associated with the character of Tony Piccolo) were genuine naval uniform by Seagoing Uniform Corp with added patches and modified collars.  The name written inside possibly refers to actor Micah May, a recurring cast member from the second and third seasons.

Worn by many of the crew as an alternative to the Seasuit, this style of uniform, (with belt and matching pants) is closest associated with the character of Lieutenant Brody, who wore similar throughout seasons 2&3 as  leader of away team missions.

UEO Guard BDU

Season: All

Character: N/A

Episode: All

UEO Guard cotton hot weather woodland camouflage combat coat (size large) featuring buttoned flapped chest pockets, shoulder epaulettes and buttoned cuffs with added UEO shoulder patch and grey triangular shoulder patch designating the rank of Enlisted Officer.

Sleeveless grey heather-style cotton ‘Beefy T’ (size large) by Hanes featuring screenprinted UEO lettering on the front and giant UEO logo on the rear.
